Youth Forum delegation attends first ever Global Forum on Youth Policy

30/10/2014

This week (28th – 30th October) the 1st Global Forum on Youth Policy is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan and the European Youth Forum has a strong presence there.

Convened by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth together with UNDP, UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the host country, Azerbaijan, the Forum is bringing together up to 700 delegates. These are representatives from national governments, youth delegates, experts, practitioners, and institution representatives from the United Nations and the Council of Europe from all continents. As well as working together and exchanging knowledge on youth policy, they are also hearing from several high-level speakers including Ahmed Alhendawi, the UN’s secretary general’s envoy on youth and His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan.

On day one delegates shared existing practices on youth policy from several regions of the world, putting into perspective the WPAY (World Programme of Action for Youth), which is celebrating the 20th anniversary next year. Delegates had the chance to exchange views, good practices and challenges on a series of priorities, from education, participation and volunteering, to health, leisure or employment/education. On the first day delegates also reflected on different realities of youth policy and the global dimension of the Forum enhanced the diversity and richness of these conversations.

Over the following two days, participants are looking more closely at common elements and indicators of a national youth policy, as well as how inter-regional cooperation can support the involved stakeholders into the implementation of inclusive cross-sectorial youth policy.

Today the Youth Forum is co-moderating the regional session and presenting the key foundations we believe youth policy should be built on, helping to ensure cooperation among key stakeholders. The Youth Forum is delighted to be involved in such a milestone event.
