On 17th and 18th June, the European Youth Forum task force on the post-2015 sustainable development agenda met in the Commonwealth Secretariat office in London. This post-2015 agenda should improve the situation of young people in Europe and all around the world, taking their rights fully into account. The first meeting of the task force precedes the “Expert group meeting on youth indicators in the context of the post-2015 development agenda”, that the Commonwealth Secretariat is organising in partnership with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs in London on 19th and 20th June.

The task force aims to identify youth-specific targets and a set of indicators for youth development, in the context of the post-2015 sustainable development agenda, with a focus on areas of high priority for young people, such as education, employment equality, governance and participation.

The task force’s core objective is also about contributing to the development of common positions and advocacy initiatives at regional and global level for the definition and the use of youth-specific targets and indicators to properly monitor and report the progress in youth development and advance the implementation of the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY), in the context of the new global agenda.

While the situation of young people today is often difficult, it is crucial that youth organisations continue to fulfill their role in building awareness and advocating for youth rights.

The European Youth Forum reaffirms the need for the full and effective implementation of the World Programme of Action for Youth and the internationally agreed development goals. The ongoing discussion on the post-2015 sustainable development agenda and its current focus on data and indicators are critical in this work. The European Youth Forum wants to make sure that the future global agenda places a strong focus on youth empowerment and that its measurement framework is consistent with the rights of young people.
