European Youth Forum member organisations reflect on a busy summer

05/09/2014

As we all return to “normal” life after the summer break, many of our member organisations have been reflecting on the summer camps and workshops they ran right across Europe.

The European Students’ Forum (AEGEE) held its 26th annual Summer University, where over 4000 young people met at university campuses across Europe to explore themes of multiculturalism, tolerance, and integration. The programme ran from June-September and delivered classes exploring different European languages, culture, skills, food, music and dance.

In Ohrid, Macedonia, the Youth of European Nationalities (YEN) were busy with two summer projects. ‘Voices of Europe’ brought 25 young singers from different minorities together to share and learn songs in each other’s languages, while ’30 Years of Roma Rights’ examined Roma history, education, rights and discrimination.

The European Foundation for Intercultural Learning (EFIL) ran their ‘Volunteer Summer Summit’ in Sutjeska, Bosnia & Herzegovina, with the support of the European Youth Foundation of the Council of Europe. The Summit offered intercultural skills training designed to supplement formal education. Service Civil International were also busy working with and developing young European volunteers, delivering seminars, meetings and camps.

Completing our snapshot, Youth For Understanding gathered 500 15-18 year olds in Werbellinsee, Germany for their ‘Young European Seminar’, to share their experiences of European exchange years abroad. In the UK, Rural Youth Europe gathered 91 young attendees to discuss the theme ‘Sustainable Development: You, Your Organisation and Your Community.’ Here in Brussels, Djynamo Belgique brought 56 young people together to discuss social inclusion and acceptance.
